Preview

The Cleveland Guardians head to Comerica Park on Wednesday, August 12 for a 6:40 PM ET AL Central clash against the Detroit Tigers. Foster Griffin gets the ball for Cleveland against Detroit's Framber Valdez in what shapes up as a pitching-heavy divisional matchup with genuine standings implications. With José Ramírez anchoring the middle of the Guardians' lineup and a Tigers roster that has steadily built around young talent, this one is worth your full attention from the first pitch.

Pitching Matchup: Griffin vs. Valdez

Foster Griffin draws the start for the Guardians. The left-hander will be tested immediately against a Detroit lineup that has real depth top to bottom. Limiting free passes and getting ahead in counts will be essential — Griffin cannot afford to let the Tigers work into deep counts and exploit any command lapses.

On the other side, Framber Valdez is a known commodity. The sinker-heavy left-hander lives on ground balls and thrives when hitters get impatient. Cleveland's offense will need to be disciplined and work counts if they want to get to Valdez early. Chasing his sinker out of the zone is exactly what he wants — the Guardians have to resist that temptation.

Keys to Watch for the Guardians

José Ramírez Against a Tough Left-Hander

Ramírez batting third is no surprise — he is Cleveland's heartbeat. How he approaches Valdez's sinker will set the tone for the entire lineup. If Ramírez can drive the ball and get on base, it opens the door for Jo Adell and the rest of the order to do damage.

Steven Kwan at the Top

Kwan leading off against Valdez is a fascinating chess match. Kwan's plate discipline and contact ability are exactly the profile you want when trying to work a sinker specialist's pitch count up early. Getting Kwan on base in the first inning could dictate the early momentum of this game.

Griffin's Command in the Early Innings

The Tigers have put together a lineup with multiple right-handed bats capable of punishing a left-hander who misses location. Griffin needs to establish himself quickly. If he can navigate the first two innings with efficiency, Cleveland has a real chance to keep this game close long enough for the bullpen to finish the job.

Prediction

Valdez is a difficult assignment, and Griffin will need to match him pitch for pitch to keep the Guardians in it. This figures to be a low-scoring, grinding divisional game — exactly the kind Cleveland has to be ready to win. Expect Ramírez to make noise and the bullpen to be a factor late. Guardians 3, Tigers 2.
